2-day virtual conference
Join us for a 2-day virtual conference as we continue the work of the Summer Learning Institute – Justice-Centered Theory, Practice, and Praxis! In addition to talks on radically humanizing and antiracist pedagogy, we will highlight educational equity programs that are causing disruption for good. This year's SLI will also feature two exclusive book talks: The White Educators’ Guide to Equity: Teaching for justice in community colleges (Peter Lang Publishers, 2022) and Until They’re All Free: Humanizing pedagogy for justice-impacted students (edited by Sims and Hotep, Forthcoming).
Our esteemed group of presenters and facilitators brought cutting-edge conversation in theory and practice, regarding:
· The new ethnic studies requirement;
· Developing a multicultural and DREAM center;
· Equitizing Dual Enrollment;
· How to employ authentic care;
· An equity pilot program across Washington state community colleges;
· Best practices in using the IMPACT Equity Toolkit, and more.
We will work to replicate the cycle of praxis—i.e., theory + practice + reflection (Freire, 1987). We will discuss the "why" and the "how" of committing to paradigm-shifting work on your campus. Learn about actual programs for community college practitioners and students that employ radically humanizing pedagogical practices, and their impressive outcomes! At the end of Day 2, registrants will receive a simple equity scorecard tool and training on how to use it on their own campus.

The SLI was founded to pioneer the way for critical dialogue FOR community college folks, BY community college folks. Education convenings are a dime a dozen, and while they often include sections for those of us in the community college space, we rarely find convenings focused on the critical work we do. Upwards of 70% of Black, Indigenous and other students of color start their college journey with us, in community colleges. We have an obligation to get this right. We are also confident that the principals and experience shared in the SLI can be effective in K12 and universities.
At Rooted in Love, we will continue to create safe spaces for critical conversations on justice-centered pedagogy, programming and policy making. We create opportunities for equity-minded community college practitioners to participate in and contribute to exigent conversations around reimagining institutional policies, procedures and pedagogies so that they are commensurate with justice. We all have a part to play! This is your invitation: Join us!
